Title
National Park Service, National Capital Region Photograph Collection
Abstract
The National Capital Region is an administrative unit of the National Park Service, encompassing Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas. This photograph collection documents the history of the region’s parks from the late 19th century through the 1960s, with the bulk of the photographs ranging from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s. The digitized photographs presented here are a sliver of the full collection and focus on the people who worked and played in the parks. Subjects include intramural sports leagues, Civilian Conservation Corps workers, celebrity performers at Rock Creek Park’s Carter Barron Amphitheater, war rallies on the National Mall, and neighborhood playgrounds and pools. Many of the collection’s photographs are credited to Abbie Rowe, a National Park Service photographer who later served as White House photographer from 1941 to 1967. The digital collection is arranged in alphabetical order.
