Abstract
Historic real estate atlases, or 'plat' maps, show the footprints of each building extant in the city at the time the atlas was published. Atlases are arranged by volume for different parts of the city (those published before 1892 were not divided into volumes). The volumes are arranged in chronological order. To determine which volume your home is in, see the volume index to the right. To find your home or building in its volume, go the index page at the beginning of each atlas. Look for your square and the corresponding plate (page) number.
Plat maps on Dig DC currently include real estate atlases from 1874-1896. Additional maps and atlases are being selected for digitization and will appear in the online collection as the digital surrogates are made and cataloged. Maps are selected for digitization based on patron use, condition, research value, and existing online availability. Please note that additional city and regional maps, including some with real estate and building information, are part of the Maps: City & Regional Collection on Dig DC. Additional Baist's Real Estate Atlases are available online from the Library of Congress for the years 1903, 1907, 1909, 1913, and 1919. Atlases from 1921 to 1968 are not available digitally, but may be viewed at D.C. Public Library.
Plat maps convey basic information about a property such as lot dimensions, building dimensions and material. These maps can also help you note old lot numbers, old street names, and old subdivision names. Studying maps over time gives a sense of the gradual development of the neighborhood surrounding your home, and shows what existed before your home was built. You can also look for changes to the shape of the footprint to investigate alterations made to the building.
The Washingtoniana Map Collection consists of more than 8,000 print and microfiche maps from 1612 to the present documenting the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. These include real estate atlases, Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, and many others covering a variety of topics and created by many sources for many different purposes. Real estate atlas holdings include plat books published by Hopkins (1877-1890s) and Baist (1903-67).
