About this collection

This collection presents highlights from the Library’s collection of campaign posters of past candidates for public office in the District of Columbia from the 1970s to the present.

The collection documents District elections after the passage of Home Rule in 1973 and primarily consists of posters for city council and mayoral candidates. Prominent people represented in the collection include Marion Barry, Charlene Drew Jarvis, Walter Fauntroy, and Arrington Dixon. The posters often present images of candidates as well as the office for when they are running and their slogans.

Items in this collection may have copyright restrictions and thus cannot be downloaded from Dig DC.

The political posters presented here are selections from the Washingtoniana Ephemera Collection.  Find out more about the collection in its finding aid on the DCPL Special Collections webpage.
