An exhibit of selectively digitized documents and other materials from our archival collections, Highlights from the Archives features Special Collections documents that otherwise are only available for research at the library.
The first highlights to enter this collection are a group of official Metropolitan Police Deparment reports on police activity during the riots that occurred in the district in April 1968 following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The documents were made publicly available for the first time due to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by high school students participating in a July 2015 collaborative digital humanities THATclass project documenting the riots and sponsored by DC Public Library. The class donated copies of the released documents to the library in November 2015 for permenent preservation and access.
